The Children’s Memorial Medical Center retained SCB to provide architectural and interior design services for the Children’s Memorial Institute for Education and Research Building (CMIER). CMIER is a state-of-the-art biological research facility that provides highly flexible and convenient research laboratory space as well as an atmosphere that supports and enriches the day-to-day activities of the researchers. Core support spaces are located internally, which frees the external, naturally lit spaces for the labs. Teaming spaces and lounges are located on each floor of the building providing ample opportunities for the research staff to collaborate in a more informal and relaxed atmosphere. The building’s exterior form is stepped away from the street so that CMIER appears less massive. The result is a building with a pedestrian scale that fits easily into the context of historic Lincoln Park.
