Rosalind Franklin University College of Medicine and Science Research Wing Addition
Chicago, Illinois
In the spirit of innovation embodied by this specialized research institution, SCB’s design for this 2-story steel and glass
medical lab addition atop an existing structure incorporates a curtainwall system of unitized insulated vision, spandrel,
and frit glass panels in combination with a steel sun shading device in an effort to minimize excessive solar gain within
the interior spaces. While the addition’s formal geometry borrows from the repetitive precast concrete forms found
throughout the campus, the new design presents an open an exciting aesthetic that provides a unique exemplar for
future development that is in concert with the University’s new vision. A sculpture set within a garden depicting a
single DNA strand symbolizes the University’s commitment to innovation in education, clinical practice, research in
DNA mapping, genomics and proteomics, and community service.
