At SCB, we know that great design comes from great people.

SCB Culture

Our firm’s culture is defined by big ideas, creative talent, and hard work. We know that by building, supporting, and empowering our community of colleagues we can continue in our mission of delivering beautiful, well-crafted, and performance-driven design.

Professional Development

We believe that growing as practitioners is essential to growing as a practice. An undercurrent of continual learning-by-doing runs throughout SCB, powered by our long-standing collaborative studio culture. Through intra-office education opportunities and a firm-wide mentorship program, to sector-based research & development groups, we are committed to investing in our people and helping them to advance their craft and realize their potential. In addition, we offer study resources, exam cost reimbursement, and accommodations to those pursuing licensure.

Work/Life Balance

The life of our firm is directly connected to the lives of our people. We know that one of the key ways we can sustain the creativity of our designers and the quality of our work is by ensuring our people are engaged and focused. To do so, we offer a variety of benefits focused on bettering life outside the studio including generous annual paid time off and holidays to recharge, paid parental and family leave to care for loved ones, and flexibility when needed to juggle it all. Our 401K retirement savings plan helps our people invest and prepare for their future.

“At the end of the day, being a good architect is not about having all the answers, but knowing the right questions to ask.”

Ben Harrison, Associate Principal

The health and well-being of our people is critical to the success of our firm. SCB offers comprehensive health, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as access to mental health support. Our offices are located in the city centers of Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, and Seattle with access to public transportation, public and private green spaces, waterfronts, fitness and bike amenities, and a wide variety of food and dining options. Each of our offices also sponsors opportunities to get active with colleagues, including numerous recreational sports teams and annual participation in city-wide wellness-focused events, as well as more social activities, such as studio outings and firm-wide events.

Community Engagement

In addition to supporting various community, education, and design-focused organizations and initiatives in our respective cities through financial contributions, we also believe in active engagement and volunteering. We are proud to offer pro-bono design services to projects across the country, helping to create places for learning, living, development, and support. We offer the opportunity to participate in firm-led volunteer initiatives throughout the year and offer an annual paid day of service for people to give back to the groups and causes that matter most to them.
