SCB participated in the Navy Pier Centennial Vision Design Competition, as local master planning / urban design expert within thePierEscape Team. Out of the 52 international teams that submitted proposals, our team advanced through two selection processes to emerge as one of the five finalists to re-imagine and re-position Navy Pier for the next century. With the intentions of urban engagement and re-invention at the water’s edge, our proposal explored many elegant concepts for reconfiguring and transforming Navy Pier with new a entry plaza, wetland park, gondola transport into the City, fantastic system of floating decks and gardens, a magical redesign of Pier Park and East-end spa, amphitheater and artful pier extensions. Inherent in our design approach was improving both pedestrian and transportation access to provide better connectivity to Streeterville as well other tourist venues, through improved transit access, compelling signage and innovative streetscape design improvements extending to Michigan Avenue and City.
