Reconstruction Award for 2 N. Riverside
The renovation and restoration of public interior spaces at 2 North Riverside in Chicago has won Special Recognition honors in Building Design and Construction Magazine’s annual Reconstruction Awards.
2 North Riverside is a 26-story Art Deco building by Holabird & Root. It was the one-time headquarters of the old Chicago Daily News, and the first air-rights structure in Chicago. SCB, with Skender Construction and McGuire Engineers, completed a two-phase remodel of two Art Deco lobbies, a retail concourse, 13 passenger elevator cabs, and multi-tenant common areas at 2 North Riverside.
The design work for Equity Office Properties was led by SCB Principal Martin Wolf. It included historical replication of original nickel-silver elevator door jams and headers, repairs to original marble floors, installation of hand-carved glass accent walls in the lobby, and fabrication of new nickel and frosted glass sconces adjusted to meet energy-conservation goals.
The Chair of the Reconstruction Awards, Mr. Walker Johnson, FAIA, says the team deserved the special recognition award because “they preserved the historical design integrity and made it functional for today.”
