Palo Verde Dining Hall
Located on the ground floor of the SCB-designed Palo Verde Residence Hall, Arizona State University’s Palo Verde Dining Hall is a 20,000-square-foot all-you-care-to-eat facility composed of four food venues- pizza, salad/deli, grill, and rotating international cuisine venues and a variety of seating options.
Palo Verde Dining Hall serves 1,500 undergraduate engineering residents. Working with Aramark, the design team wanted to play off of the engineering-focused residents and create a space that exposed the various building systems and elements. Minimal finishes were used throughout, as seen in the concrete floor, support columns, and an exposed ceiling. The few finishes utilized in the space blend natural materials (like wood and metal) and a desert palette of colors. Sustainability was a top priority for the entire Palo Verde complex and the project is projected to reach LEED Gold.
Located adjacent to the main dining hall on the ground floor is a P.O.D. Market (Provisions on Demand) – a modern corner store featuring “grab ‘n go” dining options and essentials found in a traditional convenience store. The ground floor also connects to a Maker Lab, outfitted with resources that enable students to continue working on class projects and experimental ideas. The ground floor is connected to the second floor mezzanine via a social stair, offering students a casual gathering space for interaction and collaboration. The mezzanine provides more seating options including three unique booth-like niches overlooking the floor below. The second floor also incorporates seating and technology seen predominantly in academic spaces, such as group seating areas with switchable laptop-based technology and display monitors. Another flexible component on the mezzanine is the central seating area with moveable furniture and a wall for video projection for movie screenings.
