Abu Dhabi Capital District, City Centre Plan
Development of a modern high density City Centre in the context of a hot and arid desert landscape presented many challenges to the SCB planning team leading this exciting master planning effort for Abu Dhabi’s Capital City Centre, that encompassed over 40 million square feet of mixed-use downtown development on 2,400 acres, with anticipated population of 400,000 people. These detailed district guidelines provided a compelling vision, based on urban design principles, sustainable criteria toward environmental quality and energy consumption, and achieving the highest quality of life possible for all people. Creating and sustaining a livable Arab modern city was a key objective of this plan for Abu Dhabi that incorporates the many diverse cultures and societal frameworks. Places of commerce and trade in the City Centre were oriented towards the global, modern, business world; while the residential neighborhoods were an Arab hybrid of the modern city, with traditional community gathering places, including local mosques, cultural centers, libraries, local retail shops and recreational facilities.
