Date Published

CHICAGO (August 2016) — SCB announces the promotion of Kristy Cubas, AIA and Fernando Araujo, AIA, LEED AP, CSI to the positions of Architecture Studio Leaders.

Since joining SCB over 20 years ago, Kristy has established herself as a leader in project management across numerous project types, including education facilities and multi-family residential developments. She has led several campus projects including the award-winning renovation of Manzanita Hall, a 17-story student residence hall and mid-century campus icon at Arizona State University, and the highly successful Sports and Recreation Center at Lake Forest College. In addition, Kristy has headed all of SCB’s work with the Chicago Housing Authority and Chicago Public Schools.

Fernando is a seasoned architect with 26 years of experience. In addition to being a Studio Leader, he is also one of SCB’s Technical Directors, helping to continually advance the technical expertise of the firm. His specific area of focus is on the design, documentation, and implementation of high-performance building enclosures. Fernando leads SCB’s Building Envelope Working Group, studying market trends and monitoring solutions to common enclosure challenges. Fernando has worked on numerous large-scale projects such as The Summit at Drexel University, a 1,300-bed student residence hall and dining facility; 399 Fremont in San Francisco, a 43-story residential tower; and the Quinlan School of Business Administration at Loyola University Chicago.

“Both Kristy and Fernando are tremendous assets to the firm. Their professional expertise and leadership skills make them an ideal choice for Studio Leaders,” said John Lahey, SCB Chairman. “I congratulate them both for this promotion and recognition of their hard work and dedication to the firm and the field.”

SCB is composed of five architecture studios, three being in Chicago. Each studio includes 30-35 professionals – the size of a small architecture firm. Studio Leaders are responsible for all aspects of their respective studio, including manpower, project and staff oversight, setting performance goals, and conducting reviews, to name a few. Kristy and Fernando join their fellow Studio Leaders in managing SCB’s diverse portfolio of active projects including numerous high-rise residential developments, corporate office buildings, campus environments, and aviation projects across the country.
