This is an opportunity to lead SCB’s marketing program, working with SCB’s Chicago-based Marketing and Communications team. The Marketing and Communications Director is an in-person role that connects the traditional disciplines of business development, public relations, communications, and marketing to grow the brand and build the business. This individual will use creative project storytelling and strategic thought leadership as the engine that drives the creation of marketing collateral, proposals, presentations, media placements, speaking engagements, and more. The successful candidate will bring a unique blend of strengths in messaging and storytelling, proposal writing, presentation design, as well as media relations, awards and speaking engagements. This individual will be a creative storyteller, a keen process manager, and highly organized, collaborative, and driven to succeed.

Detailed Role Description

The Director of Marketing and Communications oversees the creation and projection of the SCB brand, key messaging, and image. Reporting to the President of the firm and working with Principal leadership, the Director is responsible for developing and executing the firm’s overall marketing strategy and annual plan in order to grow the brand and build the business.

The Director is in charge of the firm’s marketing department, which is comprised of a manager, communications leader/writer, senior coordinator, coordinators, and graphic designers. This department is responsible for the development, management and execution of proposals, presentations (interview, client, and public), collateral, firm communications,, social media, public relations, photography, award submissions and all other marketing focused activities.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement overall strategic goals and objectives of the SCB marketing program with SCB’s Marketing Committee and principal leadership.
  • Develop annual marketing plan to achieve defined goals and objectives. Working with COO and key principal leadership, develop annual budget in support of marketing plan.
  • Create firm-wide and sector-specific key messaging with key principal leadership and ensure consistency and use across all communications efforts.
  • Work with the marketing and design teams to maintain graphic brand standards for internal and external materials in order to reinforce SCB’s strategic goals.
  • Oversee marketing department and overall quality of the department’s work product.
  • Work with Marketing Manager to create effective and efficient processes and systems for day-to-day operations and material creation (including but not limited to project pages, resumes, project lists, photography, website content, social media, internal communications, award submissions, etc.)
  • Create firm communications strategy and work plan, including compiling and maintaining firm-wide contact lists.
  • Work with market leaders to author original thought leadership, social media content, and web content.
  • Oversee graphic packaging and distribution of sector leader created content.
  • Provide guidance in proposal, interview and presentation strategies in collaboration with sector leaders/Principal-in-charge, business development directors, and marketing department to ensure strength and relevance of message.
  • Stay up to date on market trends with respect to marketing the firm.
  • Participate in team formation for pursuits including internal design team, consultants and out of town associate architects, as needed.
  • Oversee Public Relations consultant and help coordinate monthly meetings, facilitate client introductions and interface, transfer information on SCB projects, review all press materials, etc.
  • Advise leadership on and attend national and regional conferences, networking events and symposia as a representative of the firm and to stay current with trends in various markets and sectors.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to increase visibility of firm’s design practice and leadership including public speaking engagements, conference sessions, panel presentations, events, etc.
  • Identify strategic targets for awards and collaborate with the marketing & communications team to create winning submissions.
  • Manage the firm’s business development CRM and marketing related project data in Deltek.
  • Manage firm’s corporate giving and community support/outreach program with direction from SCB’s President. Coordinate firm’s internal design pin ups and similar programs and attend internal firm Research and Development Group meetings to stay up to date on projects and market trends.
  • Develop tracking and reporting mechanism on marketing efforts (including proposals/pursuits and SCB teams) and metrics, including an annual report on firm performance.
  • Oversee professional development of marketing staff.

Essential Skills/Attributes

  • Creative and strategic thinker with extensive knowledge of the AEC industry, terminology and procedures.
  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 12-15 years’ experience in marketing, business development, or related field, including at least 2 years in a leadership position.
  • Personable, proactive, self-starter that can motivate and manage a team.
  • Highly organized with excellent written, graphic and communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and understanding of graphic software programs such as InDesign, Affinity Design Suite and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness and ability to travel outside the office regularly for property visits, training sessions, to attend meetings, and otherwise as needed.
  • Persistent and able to follow through in a consistent manner.
