Over the past decade, SCB was instrumental in various redevelopment efforts to reposition the former Sears Roebuck Company Campus. In 2005, SCB prepared the Master Plan for Sterling Park, a new Planned Development within the 12.6 acre former Sears Roebuck Company Campus. The scope of work included adaptive reuse of historic structures with landmark status and strategic infill with new construction. This new district plan will result in 1,200 new residential dwellings units on the site.

In 2012, SCB worked with The Foundation for Homan Square to define the future redevelopment of the original Sears Tower and former site of the Sears Catalog Facility in the North Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago. This multi-phased project is acknowledged as a community “Beacon of Hope” and an economic development catalyst project for the West Side of Chicago, due to the creation of a nonprofit arts and social service incubator facility. In an underserved community with limited resources, these programs offer critical opportunities for workforce development training, business assistance, and job creation. SCB facilitated outreach with the community and incubator stakeholders; provided building programming and architectural design services, and created a detailed adaptive reuse and renovation plan for the original iconic and historic Sears Tower.

A decade later, in 2015, SCB has been engaged again to amend the Planned Development PD to incorporate a new satellite West Side campus for Chicago State University. This will be a significant benefit to the community workforce and economic development.
